Global Panel Director, Prof Sandy Thomas, attended the launch of the African Leaders for Nutrition Initiative (ALN), inaugurated by Panel Member, and President of the African Delvelopment Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina on the margins of the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

African leaders, who include Prime Minister of Lesotho, Motsoahae Thomas Thabane, President of Madagascar, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, President of Senegal, Macky Sall, and Former President of Ghana, John A. Kufuor, made a landmark commitment to remove nutrition-related barriers that prevent children and societies from realising their full potential.

The ceremony gathered representatives from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Big Win Philanthropy, the Dangote Foundation, and other development partners. The African Union has endorsed the African Leaders for Nutrition initiative and encouraged its champions to continue to dialogue and strengthen advocacy efforts in support of improved nutrition.

The African Leaders for Nutrition initiative was first proposed at the Global Panel’s Annual Meeting in Accra, November 2015.
