The Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition’s new report Building Resilience and Enhancing Nutrition in Africa’s food systems, was discussed at an event hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Agriculture, at the House of Lords, Westminster.

The event, attended by over over 40 distinguished science and policy experts featured contributions from:

  • Lord Ewen Cameron of Dillington, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Agriculture,
  • Lord Jonny Oates,  the All-Party Parliamentary Group Officer
  • Sir John Beddington, Chair of the Global Panel
  • Orla McBreen, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Ireland in London.

 

It also included a panel discussion moderated by Global Panel member, Tom Arnold and featuring members of the project’s lead experts group:

  • Prof Evan Fraser, Chair of Lead Expert Group, and Director of Arrell Food Institute, University of Guelph
  • Dr Andrew Jamali, National Planning Commission, Malawi
  • Dr Mirriam Matita, University of Lilongwe, Malawi
  • Dr Patrick Kormawa, Director of Food Security and Climate-Smart Agricultural  Transformation, Sierra Leone
  • Dr Adinew Abate, Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Programme Manager, Seqota Declaration, Ministry of Health, Ethiopia
  • Prof Andy Dougill, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, University of York

The event  helped engage key UK stakeholders, particularly donor organisations, policy makers, the private sector, the research and wider international community with the new Report. Attendees sought  to find solutions to ensure that food systems, their transformation, and their adaptation to climate change and other threats are given high priority in the allocation of funds, for example through the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance announced at COP29.
